I was finally able to set aside an evening to go through the movable type template files and fix many broken links and busted css pages (main thing being those drop down menus on the left side!). Next up is rethinking and implementing proper tags/categories.

Here's some nerdy reading treats making the rounds on the internet.

Jon Udell created the AMAZING LibraryLookup Bookmarklet. Side note: a bookmarklet is a small bit of javascript stored as a URL within a bookmark that can do a range of tasks at the push of a bookmark button (see more on it here). Say you're looking at a book on amazon.com (or bn.com, etc.), you click the bookmarklet and it will search for the book at your local library. Coupled with the online reservation and delivery to your local branch feature that many library systems now have = RIDICULOUS!

For Brooklyn, use "http://catalog.brooklynpubliclibrary.org" as your base URL, "Brooklyn Public Library" or "BPL" as your Library Name, and "Innovative" (top option) as your Vendor. Then "install" your bookmarklet by dragging it to your browser's link toolbar. Note: this system uses ISBN numbers, so your best bet is looking up hardcover versions of books over paperbacks.

(via 43 folders)

DailyLit sends you five minute chunks of public domain books for free via email or RSS feed. Most are classics, but Lawrence Lessig's Free Culture and Cory Doctorow's Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom represent for Creative Commons.

I'm not sure if all these works will lend themselves to a serial format, but it's worth a try. Looks like the creators have been listening to their users and added features like customizing the amplitude/frequency of your subscriptions, "Add next installment to feed right now" buttons, and the ability to preview entire works on the website (preview in installment form).

Top of my list are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (37 Installments), The Devil's Dictionary (79 Installments), Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions (37 Installments), and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (51 Installments).

what a pain, but hopefully there will be no more site outtages and freak outs due to bandwidth spikes.

Anthony McCall - Between You and I (2006) and Long Film for Four Projectors (1974)

I've never seen McCall’s work in person, but freaked out the first time I saw documentation of the lovely formalist film-meets-sculpture Line Describing a Cone and Long Film for Four Projectors. I was also interested to see his recent work lists materials as "computer file, digital projector" rather than "16mm film". The gallery has some images here.

The story:
The play follows generational cycles of immigration, during which a tenement "village" rises out of the tidal marsh just north of New Amsterdam. Native Americans who find food and refuge in the swamp are displaced -- or worse -- by Dutch settlers, whose farms are swallowed in turn by shipyards, ironworks, tobacco factories, sweatshops and tenements. Newcomers escaping the nightmares of pogroms, famine and war bring their dreams to this slice of the New World, another frontier village that in its own time is burned and ripped apart by cultural conflict.

Music by the Hungry Marching Band. It's a three week run, January 25 - February 11, at La MaMa. Thursdays through Sundays at 7:30 pm with a Sunday matinee at 2:30. Tickets are $20 plus $2.50 convenience charge.

Hot on the heels of AE7.0.1 improvements, MacRumors reports: Photoshop CS3 Beta is out today. Anyone with a (real) serial for a previous version can download and try it out.

Full rundown of new features here. Most notably, a modified user interface and 'smart filters'. Smart filters being what we've been aching for... non destructive filters that modify your image but don't bake the changes... letting you go back and change them later a la after effects. You must change a layer into a 'smart object' in order to use 'smart filters', but no big loss there. Another note is that if you're editing a 16bit image, not all of the filters are available.

Two great built-in features are a mask for the layer's smart filters, and a blending options palette for each filter. The blending options palette allows you to give a custom blending mode and opacity for each filter... HOW GREAT IS THAT?!?

Check it out in motion on Richard Harrington's sneak peak video podcast. The Smart Filters sneak peek is the one you want -- complete with demo of the Chris & Trish Meyer 'instant sex' technique using smart filter blending options palette (traditionally done by duplicating a layer, blurring, then an overlay blending mode).

Still no sign of a solo layers button (sad). And when are they going to make luma mattes work with the same opt+click functionality as alpha mattes?

Update: FlickR'd screenshots!
