Kinetoscope is an interactive video object that allows users to control the motion of a living, illustrated city. From the outside, the Kinetoscope is a free-standing red booth with a curtained viewfinder and hand crank. When a participant lifts up the curtain and peers inside, she finds an invented city resting precariously on the head of crane. As soon as the hand crank is turned, the image comes to life — the direction and velocity of the crank affecting the city accordingly.
Kinetoscope is inspired by the moving picture machines of the late 19th-century. It seeks to evoke feelings of delight and discovery created by one's intimate interaction with a small, encapsulated world. Ideally, it can function as a public art piece that is enticing and approachable, and can be enjoyed by passersby at their leisure.
